Raising the Perfect Pigeon
The wonderful pigeons of to-day, so varied in color, size, type, feather and general appearance are all descended from one original stock or strain. Darwin states that the Rock-Dove is the ancestor of all pigeons. The Rock-Dove is certainly a descendant of the original dove sent out by Noah. There are about one hundred and fifty varieties that originated from that one”breed. This result shows what care and a knowledge of the fundamental points in a pigeon will do. The mighty Pouter and the small sized Owl are both traced to the original stock. It is a tribute to the earlier fanciers who made them. There is hardly a country without its pigeons and its pigeon fanciers. The old Romans had them in swarms. We see the Pigeon in bas-relief on many of the old ruins of Ancient Rome.
The goal of the pigeon fancier is to produce the perfect pigeon. Even though there are thousands of breeders engaged in the pursuit of breeding high-class Pigeons, the perfect bird has yet to be produced. This is where the great enchantment of the Fancy lies. Perfection is the goal, but as we near the goal our ideal becomes more lofty. We observe points which need refining which we had previously overlooked and so the object that we are striving for is kept from our reach. That is OK because it makes the fight for supremacy keener. The man of small means, who is rich in practical knowledge and experience,
stands as good a chance of breeding a champion Pigeon of the year as his affluent brother. There is a chance for the youngest, as well as the poorest, fancier, if he is patient, to reach his aim of breeding the champion of the year.
There are different reasons why men enter the ranks of
columbophilists. Some seek pleasure and relaxation from the cares of business and give them satisfaction and interest in life.. Some desire to add to their incomes,
Raising pigeons for their meat is light and interesting, the profits can be large and steady, but it is a business that must be Started with essential knowledge and on a scientific basis. It embraces many branches of very practical knowledge. Few people who take up pigeon raising take the trouble to understand this or to study the nature of pigeons on whom they are entirely dependent for success. Pigeons by nature are as delicate and refined as the most sensitive human beings and it requires proficiency and skill to deal with them profitably. In order to be successful financially, the pigeon raiser must concentrate his interests on the welfare of his pigeons, who are entirely dependent on him for all things. Otherwise he should remove his wire netting and let them shift for themselves.
There are innumerable varieties of Pigeon houses, but many of them, such as the locker against the wall, the cote on the top of a pole, and the artistic three decker arrangements for lawns are not suitable for
the breeder who wishes to breed birds for exhibition purposes.
There are three essentials needed in a pigeon house.
It mustbe perfectly damp and draft proof.
It must be well ventilated. Pigeons are hot-blooded creatures, and can withstand a tolerable amount of cold providing the atmosphere in which they live is dry.Damp and drafts they cannot stand., and the strongest quickly succumb to the influences of either.
No fancier should start with more than three or four pairs of birds. It requires some time for one to become accustomed to the needs and desires of a stock of Pigeons. It is impossible for a new breeder to successfully look after a big stud. It is wrong to think that all one needs to do is to buy a number of first-class birds, great winners, pair them together, and immediately winners will be developed. Those with experience know that such methods will most certainly
bring failure. To become a successful breeder of Pigeons you must serve a fairly solitary indoctrination and oftentimes come through much disappointment and aggravation before the goal is reached.
